FAQs at Life Certificate
1. What is the purpose of a Life Certificate?
One of the major requisite for the pensioners post their retirement from service, is to provide life certificates to the authorized pension disbursing agencies like Banks, Post offices etc., following which their pension is credited to their account. High Commission of India, Ottawa issues the Life Certificates to the pensioners after physical verification of the pensioner.
2. What is the process for issuance of Life Certificate?
LIFE CERTIFICATE BY POSTAL MEANS - The Life Certificate requests may be sent by Post/Courier to the High Commission (365 Bloor St E #700, Toronto, ON M4W 3L4) along with required documents given below and self-addressed prepaid envelope for return of documents. For postal applications, applicants are requested to provide local whatsapp number for video call for verification purpose.
DROP-OFF FACILITY - High Commission has provided a drop-off facility for Life Certificates at – BLS Brampton ( 20 Gillingham Drive, Unit 701, Brampton, ON L6X 5A5) and HCI, Ottawa (365 Bloor St E #700, Toronto, ON M4W 3L4 ) which may also be utilized by the Pensioners to get the Life Certificate issued. The applicants will be required to drop-off, in a sealed envelope, their duly filled in application forms (click here) in duplicate (providing local whatsapp number for video chat) along with copy of the passport, proof of address and self addressed pre-paid envelope of Canada Post or any courier company to facilitate return of the service documents. Life Certificate will be issued only after verification of the applicant through video chat.
CONSULAR CAMPS: As in the past, High Commission has been organizing Consular Camps starting November 2020 for issuance of Life Certificates at various places under its Consular jurisdiction.
Applicants are required to register on the link (click here) for this purpose, which is also available on High Commission’s website. Applicants will be informed by email of a particular time to visit these venues to avoid unnecessary rush given the COVID-19 situation. All are requested to register on the given link and also check their emails one or two days before the scheduled dates.
IN PERSON SERVICE AT HCI OTTAWA-. Applicants are required to register on the link (click here) for this purpose. Applicants will be informed by email of a particular time to visit the Consulate to avoid unnecessary rush given the COVID-19 situation
For in-person attestation, documents required are – duly filled in updated application form (click here) in duplicate; original passport for verification purpose (which will be returned immediately after attestation on the spot).
3. What are the documents required?
Filled in application form duly signed - to be submitted in duplicate.
Original Indian/Canadian passport – Only for in person-service. Passport will be returned on the spot after verification
Copy of Indian/Canadian passport – Only for postal service.
4. What is the fee applicable for issuance of Life Certificate?
Life Certificate for pension purposes is issued on gratis basis.
It is to be noted that in case Life Certificate is required for purposes other than pension, fee applicable is C$ 28 is for one seal & signature of the High Commission, if applicant needs seal & signature on more pages fee applicable will be C$ 28 x number of pages. This can be paid by bank draft/money order in favor of High Commission of India, Ottawa
5. Will the High Commission be dispatching Life Certificates on applicant's behalf directly to the disbursing authorities like banks, post offices, etc.?
No. It is the pensioner’s responsibility to dispatch the Life Certificate to the concerned authorities. High Commission has no role in this.
