FAQs at Ashes Certificate

1. One of my close family members died in Canada recently. All the rituals related to funeral has been done in Canada, now I wish to carry the Ashes to India?

For carrying Ashes to India from Canada, besides fulfilling other guidelines as prescribed by Canadian Immigration authorities and Airlines, you are required to have Certificate for carrying Ashes from the High Commission.For carrying Ashes to India from Canada, besides fulfilling other guidelines as prescribed by Canadian Immigration authorities and Airlines, you are required to have Certificate for carrying Ashes from the High Commission.

2. How to obtain certificate from the High Commission for carrying Ashes to India ?

This service is provided directly by the High Commission of India (10 Springfield Rd, Ottawa, Ontario K1M 1C9), therefore do not approach BLS or any other office for this purpose.

The immediate family memberof deceased who is travelling to India is required to submit request to High Commission for issuing Certificate for carrying Ashes.

3. What documents are required for obtaining ‘Certificate for carrying Ashes to India’ from the High Commission?

The followingdocumentsare required to be submitted :

(a)  Application form (can be downloaded from the below link)

(b) Passport (original and copy) of immediate family member of the deceased who will be carrying Ashes to India

(c)  Address proof in Canada of the immediate family member of the deceased who will be carrying Ashes to India (Driving License, Utility Bills (Phone, Internet, Electricity, etc)

(d)  Status in Canada of immediate family member of the deceased who will be carrying Ashes to India  (copy of Visa/PR/Study Permit / Work Permit) - applicablefor Indian Passport holder only

(e)  Death Certificate from Canadian authorities

(f) Cremation Certificate issued by funeral home

(g)  Passport of the deceased (original and copy)

(h) Certificate from the Funeral Home / authority sealed Urn, certifying that the Urn is sealed and containing Ashes of the deceased (name).

(i) Authorization letter from the close relative of the deceased, in case Urn having Ashes is proposed to be carried by other than close relative of the deceased.

(j) Fee of C$ 25 + C$ 3= C$28 is to be paid in by Bank Draft/Money Order in favour of “High Commission of India”. The fee can be paid by debit card in the High Commission.

4. How to visit High Commission for obtaining Certificate for carrying Ashes?

Once you are able to arrange all the prescribed documents, you can book appointment for visiting High Commission Certificate for carrying Ashes.  The appointment can be booked through Suvidha Portal on the following link :

5. How much time is taken for issue of Certificate for carrying Ashes by the High Commission?

The request is processed in prompt manner.  The certificate will be issued and handed over on the same date of your visit to the High Commission.
